Alfred University represented at ACerS 10th International Congress on Ceramics
The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) held the 10th International Congress on Ceramics July 14-18, 2024, in Montreal, Canada, and Alfred University was well represented.
Two faculty members—S.K. Sundaram, Inamori Professor of materials science and engineering, and Yiquan Wu, Inamori Professor of ceramic engineering—and graduate student Nathaniel Marrero ’23 represented Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering and the New York State College of Ceramics at the international meeting, which drew 250 attendees (including 45 students) from 24 countries, with 307 abstracts submitted.
Marrero, who earned a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering from Alfred University in 2023 and who is now pursuing a master’s degree, made two presentations. One was an oral presentation with Sundaram, “Processing and Characterization of Model Cermet Waste Forms for Nuclear Applications.” He also presented a poster, “Novel Waste Forms for Nuclear Applications,” with Sundaram, A.S. Piechota, and N.R. Sponenberg. The presentations were based on research progress and data collected in the Inamori School of Engineering under a current multi-institutional U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) project.
Wu made an invited presentation titled, “Wet Chemical Synthesis of II-VI Powders for Sintering Transparent Ceramics.”
